The weekend was predicted to be sunny and all I could think of was a happy getaway among the mountains! So I looked up places closest to Munich and the region of Allgäu caught my eye. Allgäu is close to a two hour drive from Munich. It is an area of sheer beauty in Southern Germany, spilling over to Austria. A place filled with dramatic landscapes, castles, breathtaking lakes and mountains!

How about visiting the mountains to enjoy the fresh morning air and then spending the afternoon swimming in the refreshing cool waters of a lake? Doesn’t it sound just perfect for a summer weekend? If the answer is yes, then I would highly recommend visiting Herzogstand and Walchensee. I visited Herzogstand based on a colleague’s recommendation and have been there twice so far. The turquoise shades of the lake Walchen (Walchensee) with the blue indigo mountains serving as a backdrop is a view to die for. The beautiful landscape around this mountain lake consists of stunning untouched nature.
Calm, peaceful and just beautiful! Königssee is undoubtedly the number one choice on my list when asked for a recommendation on what place to see in Bavaria. Königssee translates to ‘Kings Lake’ in German and is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Berchtesgaden National Park.
